What Is Binge Drinking? To most people, binge drinking brings to mind a self-destructive and unrestrained drinking bout lasting for at least a couple of days during which time the heavily intoxicated drinker "drops out" by not working, ignoring responsibilities, squandering money, and engaging in other harmful behaviors such as fighting or risky sex. As the editor of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol emphasizes, binge describes an extended period of time (typically at least two days) during which time a person repeatedly becomes intoxicated and gives up his or her usual activities and obligations in order to become intoxicated. It is the combination of prolonged use and the giving up of usual activities that forms the core of the clinical definition of binge. 1 Other researchers have explained that it is counter-productive to brand as pathological the consumption of only five drinks over the course of an evening of eating and socializing. Body fascism is a problem that has evolved out of western society's obsession with thinness. Body fascism is defined as: The severe intolerance in self and others of any weight or shape that doesn't resemble idealised bodies portrayed in media images. These images are usually of extremely thin young women with noticeable lack of curves, often looking pre-pubescent or androgynous. In men, the idealised form is muscular and well toned, with broad shoulders and narrow hips. Body fascism involves severe criticism of other people's size and shape, often resulting in the rejection or bullying of those who don't conform to a specific body type. The effects of body fascism Many people suffer from the effects of body fascism with young people in particular being especially vulnerable. In order to maintain or achieve a thin shape young people may diet frequently, exercise excessively, take diet pills, skip meals, or use smoking and drugs as appetite suppressants. Some may even use vomiting, laxatives or diuretics. Young people who diet are at greater risk of developing eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia nervosa. Skipping family meals and lack of positive associations with enjoying food can also significantly contribute to these difficulties. Young people frequently compare themselves to thin fashion models and perceive themselves as 'fat' in comparison, rather than healthy and attractive. In addition, the idea that overweight people are stupid and out of control because they eat too much or are lazy, still prevails in society. Body fascism and eating disorders Body fascism at its worst can result in the development of an eating disorder. The two types of eating disorders with which people are most familiar are anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders normally start during adolescence, affect both girls and increasingly boys, and can severely affect physical, emotional and social development. Anorexia nervosa is characterised by deliberate weight loss through avoiding 'fattening foods'. Bulimia nervosa is characterised by repeated bouts of overeating and intense preoccupation with controlling body weight. With both, sufferers may make themselves sick, take laxatives, and exercise excessively in order to lose weight - and this desire is intense. These symptoms are not primarily about food - rather, the food related behaviour is symptomatic of underlying emotional and psychological difficulties.
