Like clockwork - the corporate media 'terror network' linking continues
London Bombs Claimed by Al-Qaeda Group Linked to Madrid Attacks
July 9 (Bloomberg) -- A group that claimed last year's Madrid train bombings in the name of al-Qaeda today said it was also behind blasts in London that killed at least 50 people and injured 700 two days ago, according to an Islamist Web site. The statement attributed to the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades' Europe section is the second in which a group purporting to be part of al-Qaeda has said it carried out the bombings of three London Underground trains and a bus.
``A group of mujahedeen from a division of the Abu Hafs al- Masri Brigades piled blow after blow on the infidel capital, the British capital, leaving dead and injured,'' according to the latest statement. ``First there was Madrid, then Istanbul, and now London, and tomorrow the mujahedeen will have other words to say.'' The statement has not been verified by authorities.
London police yesterday said the attacks bore the ``hallmarks of al-Qaeda.'' Europeans were urged in a Brigades statement a year ago to accept a truce offer from al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, which called for the withdrawal of forces from Muslim countries, or risk further assaults. U.S. authorities have cast doubt on the existence of the group.
Six weeks ago, a similar statement attributed to the group's European members threatened ``an attack whose time has come,'' and urged violence on U.S.-led forces in Iraq. - bloomberg.com

Al Queda : Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigade
spurious claims: do they even exist?
The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigade was named after the training commander of al-Qaeda network, Abu Hafs al-Masri aka Muhammad Atef, and was founded after his death in 2001.
Abu Hafs was an Egyptian national, who was nicknamed al-Masri meaning 'the Egyptian' in Arabic. He was a core member of the Islamic Jihad group, which successfully carried out the assassination of the Egyptian president Anwar al-Sadat on October 6, 1981.
Abu Hafs joined Osama bin Laden in the early 1980s when the two were fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan. He participated in the establishment of al-Qaeda (the base) organization.
As a former Egyptian police officer, Abu Hafs al-Masri took charge of the organization's security. He assumed control of the training camps after the former commander Abu Ubaida al-Banshiri was drowned in
Victoria Lake, Uganda, in 1996.
One of al-Masri's daughters was married to one of bin Laden's sons. disaster-management

Previous False Warnings:
The "Brigades" have a long history of making false claims of responsibility for acts perpetrated by other organizations and events with no connection to terrorism, such as the blackout in the Northeast of the U.S. in August 2003, the attacks on the Jewish synagogues in Istanbul in November 2003, and the Madrid bombings of March 2004 - MEMRI
Why would the authorities mention this group if it has a history of FALSE claims?
I think its called 'seeing if it will fly'

Description
Egypt's largest militant group, active since the late 1970s; appears to be loosely organized. Has an external wing with a worldwide presence. The group issued a cease-fire in March 1999, but its spiritual leader, Shaykh Umar Abd al-Rahman, incarcerated in the United States, rescinded his support for the cease-fire in June 2000. The Gama'a has not conducted an attack inside Egypt since August 1998. Rifa'i Taha Musa-a hardline former senior member of the group-signed Usama Bin Ladin's February 1998 fatwa calling for attacks against US civilians. The IG since has publicly denied that it supports Bin Ladin and frequently differs with public statements made by Taha Musa. Taha Musa has in the last year sought to push the group toward a return to armed operations, but the group, which still is led by Mustafa Hamza, has yet to break the unilaterally declared cease-fire. In late 2000, Taha Musa appeared in an undated video with Bin Ladin and Ayman al-Zawahiri threatening retaliation against the United States for Abd al-Rahman's continued incarceration. The IG's primary goal is to overthrow the Egyptian Government and replace it with an Islamic state, but Taha Musa also may be interested in attacking US and Israeli interests.
|
Activities
Group specialized in armed attacks against Egyptian security and other government officials, Coptic Christians, and Egyptian opponents of Islamic extremism before the cease-fire. From 1993 until the cease-fire, al-Gama'a launched attacks on tourists in Egypt, most notably the attack in November 1997 at Luxor that killed 58 foreign tourists. Also claimed responsibility for the attempt in June 1995 to assassinate Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Gama'a has never specifically attacked a US citizen or facility but has threatened US interests.
Strength
Unknown. At its peak the IG probably commanded several thousand hard-core members and a like number of sympathizers. The 1998 cease-fire and security crackdowns following the attack in Luxor in 1997 probably have resulted in a substantial decrease in the group's numbers.
|
Location/Area of Operation
Operates mainly in the Al-Minya, Asyu't, Qina, and Sohaj Governorates of southern Egypt. Also appears to have support in Cairo, Alexandria, and other urban locations, particularly among unemployed graduates and students. Has a worldwide presence, including Sudan, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Austria, and Yemen.
External Aid
Unknown. The Egyptian Government believes that Iran, Bin Ladin, and Afghan militant groups support the organization. Also may obtain some funding through various Islamic nongovernmental organizations.

Neither does this article: written on the day of the Madrid attacks
"Five years ago, Ms. Sirrs warned of an equally diabolical jihadi terrorist leader who also remains at large-Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Egyptian doctor, the chief military-operations planner for the Al Qaeda network, has become the movement's mouthpiece while Osama is on the run. His most recent taped message, broadcast on Al-Jazeera last week and said to be authentic by the C.I.A., warned: "Bush, strengthen your defenses and your security measures, for the Islamic nation which sent you the legion of New York and Washington brigades has determined to send you legion after legion seeking death and paradise."
Dr. al-Zawahiri and Mr. bin Laden have been partners in the terrorist business since 1993, when Mr. bin Laden merged Al Qaeda with Dr. al-Zawahiri's Egyptian jihadi movement. The two met when Mr. bin Laden was treated for low blood pressure by the Egyptian doctor, who was six years older and, as founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, already a full-fledged fanatic credited with the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar al Sadat."
Dr. al-Zawahiri and Mr. bin Laden announced the launch of their "campaign of terror" in November of 1997.

More speculation as to who was behind it - a 'European terror ring' - Casablanca...
09 July 2005 [excerpt] Although investigators did not pinpoint any suspects sought in connection with the worst attack London has known since World War II, media reports said police had requested European counterparts seek out information on radical Moroccan cleric Mohammed al Garbuzi, who lived in Britain for 16 years before vanishing from his north London home last year.
Al Garbuzi, leader of the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM), is believed to have travelled to France. His group is blamed for attacks that killed 45 people in the Moroccan city of Casablanca in May 2003.
London police refused to comment on reports they are hunting al Garbuzi, but British dailies the Daily Mail and the Independent said in their Saturday editions that they had made "a Europe-wide request for information" on the 45-year-old awarded asylum in Britain a decade ago.
The Independent said al Garbuzi is linked to Abu Qatada, a Palestinian cleric based in London who is considered the "spiritual head" of Al-Qaeda in Europe.

'Al-Qaeda' group claims London attacks, threatens others
A group calling itself the Organisation of Al-Qaeda Jihad in Europe claimed Thursday's attacks in London and threatened similar ones in Italy, Denmark and other countries with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Heroic mujahedeens carried out a sacred attack in London, and here is Britain burning in fear, terror, and fright in the north, south, east and west," said a statement posted on the Internet, which could not be authenticated.
The group said the attacks were "in response to the massacres carried out by Britain in Iraq and Afghanistan."
"We have repeatedly warned the government and people of Britain, and we have now fulfilled our promise and have carried out a sacred military attack in Britain," it said.
"We continue to warn the governments of Denmark, Italy and all the Crusaders that they will meet the same punishment if they do not withdraw their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan."

The organisation calls itself the Secret Organisation Group of al-Qaeda [literally the base] of Jihad Organisation in Europe.
The group is previously unknown.
The website has previously carried statements purporting to be from al-Qaeda. It is not possible to verify such claims published on the web.
This is the full text of the statement.
In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate, may peace be upon the cheerful one and undaunted fighter, Prophet Muhammad, God's peace be upon him.
Nation of Islam and Arab nation: Rejoice for it is time to take revenge against the British Zionist Crusader government in retaliation for the massacres Britain is committing in Iraq and Afghanistan. The heroic mujahideen have carried out a blessed raid in London. Britain is now burning with fear, terror and panic in its northern, southern, eastern, and western quarters.
We have repeatedly warned the British Government and people. We have fulfilled our promise and carried out our blessed military raid in Britain after our mujahideen exerted strenuous efforts over a long period of time to ensure the success of the raid.
We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all the Crusader governments that they will be punished in the same way if they do not withdraw their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. He who warns is excused.

Italy plans Iraq troop pull-out
Berlusconi said he was responding to public opinion
15 March, 2005 - Italy is to begin withdrawing its troops from Iraq in September 2005, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said. He told Rai state television the pullout would take place "in agreement with our allies". Italy has 3,000 troops in Iraq - the fourth largest foreign contingent.
Domestic opposition to Italy's involvement in Iraq intensified after the killing of an Italian agent by US troops in Baghdad earlier this month. The surprise announcement came as Italy's lower house of parliament backed a recent Senate vote to extend the country's military presence in Iraq beyond June.

Bush / Saudi - Houston webhost Link to The 'Secret Organisation'
UK-based dissident denies link to website that carried al-Qaida claim
David Pallister - July 9, 2005 The Guardian
The claim of responsibility for the London attacks was first posted on one of the dozens of Islamic websites that are routinely monitored by western intelligence services.
The statement, under the name of the Secret Organisation of the al-Qaida Jihad in Europe, said: "The heroic mujahideen have carried out a blessed raid in London. Britain is now burning with fear, terror and panic in its northern, southern, eastern and western quarters."
It was posted on an Arabic website, al-qal3ah.com, which is registered by Qalaah Qalaah in Abu Dhabi and hosted by a server in Houston, Texas.
But two Israeli groups devoted to exposing the network of jihadist sites claim that it is connected to the London-based Saudi dissident Saad al-Faqih. Mr Faqih, who is based in Willesden, north-west London, and runs the Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia (Mira), was designated by the US treasury last December as a supporter of al-Qaida. The UK Treasury followed suit by freezing Mr Faqih's assets. Speaking in December 2004 before the assets were frozen, Mr Faqih ridiculed any idea that "millions of dollars" would be frozen. "I have no assets in the US and all I have in the UK is a current account with a few hundred pounds."
The US claimed that Mr Faqih was an associate of Khaled al-Fawwaz, who was arrested in Britain on a US extradition warrant for his alleged involvement in the 1998 east African embassy bombings. The US said that "extremists utilise a website controlled by al-Faqih and Mira on messageboards to post al-Qaida-related statements and images. While Mira has issued disclaimers warning users to not attribute postings on Mira message boards to al-Qaida, information available to the US and UK governments shows that the messages are intended to provide ideological and financial support to al-Qaida affiliated networks and potential recruits." Mr Faqih has always vigorously denied being involved with terrorism. Yesterday he was indignant about being linked to the website. "It does not belong to me at all," he told the Guardian. "It is a Zionist smear." He had seen the message on Thursday morning and doubted its authenticity. "It was only there for a few minutes, and they misquoted the Qur'an." He also said the website - or more accurately a bulletin board - could be used by anyone.
The server in Houston has intriguing connections. Everyone's Internet was founded by brothers Robert and Roy Marsh in 1998 and by 2002 had an income of more than $30m (now about £17m). Renowned for his charitable work, Roy Marsh counts among his friends President George Bush's former sister-in-law, Sharon Bush, and the president's navy secretary. Everyone's Internet, which also hosts a number of pornographic sites, states: "We support the uncensored flow of information and ideas over the internet and do not actively monitor subscriber activity under normal circumstances."
However, the company has responded to requests to take down objectionable material and insists it cooperates with US law enforcement agencies.

An Interview With Jon David, The Man Who Hacked al-Queda's Homepage
Jon David: Since September 11th. I felt powerless at first like everyone else, then thought that the one thing I do know is the Internet. So I took it upon myself at that point to do everything within my ability to disrupt the flow of terrorist information and communication on the net. I immediately began registering sound-like domains, similars, etc., like Al-Quada.com, Alneda.org, and eventually I succeeded in hijacking Alneda.com, al-Queda's domain itself.
John Hawkins: Was that your first big success?
Jon David: No, actually I had a great deal of success with the similar domains of Alneda.org and Alneda.net because each time the feds shut down Alneda.com, the hostiles would gravitate towards the .net & .org pages thinking that that was the site. Even before I gained control of Alneda.com, I logged information that I passed on to the authorities. I was able to track the people who accessed the website, which reads like a virtual who's who of hostile nations. But, I have to say capturing Alneda.com was certainly the coup de grace.
John Hawkins: You logged the information and sent it to the FBI is that correct? Are they giving you any indication that they're doing anything with it? I ask because if they have IPs and times they can literally go the ISPs these guys are connecting with and then they can turn it into names and addresses they can compare to terrorist watch lists and intelligence reports...
Jon David: We have all the IP addresses to the tune of 27 thousand visitors a day seeking Alneda.com (the calling) from every hostile country imaginable. But interestingly enough, 90% were from Saudi Arabia.

...Septemeber 2005...and a video is released on Al Jazeera...
notice how this story links it to the Zawahiri tape
released earlier this year to seek to legitimize it
A video grab from Al Jazeera television aired on September 1, 2005, shows a man believed to be one of the July 7 London suicide bombers, Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30. Al Jazeera said the tape contained the will of Khan, in which he blamed the attacks on Britain's support for the war on Iraq and Western "tyrants". At least two groups linked to al Qaeda have already claimed responsibility for the July 7 suicide bombings on London's transport system which killed 52 people. REUTERS/Al Jazeera TV via REUTERS TV
|
Khan appears on Tape
DUBAI (Reuters) - The suspected ringleader of the July 7 London suicide bombers warned of more strikes in a pre-death videotaped statement that included praise for the bombings from al Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri.
"Until we feel security you will be our targets and until you stop the bombing, gassing, imprisonment and torture of my people we will not stop this fight. We are at war and I am a soldier," said Mohammad Sidique Khan on a videotape aired by Al Jazeera television on Thursday.
Al Jazeera presented al Qaeda deputy Zawahri and Khan in separate segments of videotaped statements, which the network described as a claim of responsibility from al Qaeda for the blasts on London's transport system which killed 52 people.
|
Neither statement explicitly said Osama bin Laden's network was behind the bombings carried out by Khan, two other British Muslims of Pakistani origin and a Jamaican-born Briton.
It was not clear how long before Khan's death the tape had been made, or where. The single videotape appeared to be a compilation of different pieces of footage. Zawahri and Khan did not appear together on the tape.
Zawahri warned there would be more attacks like the London bombings on Western countries that took part in the U.S.-led wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The blessed London raid was a slap in the face of the arrogant, crusader British rulers," Zawahri said in the recording which appeared very similar to a video aired by Al Jazeera on Aug 4.
"We have repeated again and again, and here we are warning one more time -- all those who took part in the aggression on Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine, we will respond in kind."
"GLORIOUS" ATTACK
The Arabic television channel showed Khan wearing a turban, talking directly to the camera, seemingly relaxed and speaking in the heavy accent common to people from Yorkshire in northern England, where he had lived.
Khan called bin Laden, Zawahri, and al Qaeda in Iraq leader Musab al-Zarqawi "today's heroes" and hailed "martyrs" who had given their lives in defence of Islam.
"Our words are dead until we give them life with our blood," he said. "I and thousands like me are forsaking everything for what we believe."
Khan and another of the bombers Shehzad Tanweer, travelled to Pakistan between November and February, where madrasas, or religious schools have been under scrutiny after some were accused of breeding extremism.
Pakistani security forces have also been searching for members of al Qaeda in remote areas of the country.
Neither British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Downing Street office nor the Foreign Office commented on the tape.
But David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary (interior minister) of the main opposition Conservative Party, said in a statement: "Nothing can justify the murder of innocent people. People across Britain will be sickened by this video."
London's police chief Ian Blair said the bombings bore all the hallmarks of an al Qaeda operation as it was a multiple coordinated attack on a city's transport system. But security sources have told Reuters that they had not found any evidence to back up claims an al Qaeda mastermind was behind the attack and said they were not looking for a "Mr Big".
Detectives have said they believe Khan, 30 and the oldest of the July 7 suicide bombers, was the leader of the group.
"GLORIOUS RAID"
An Al Jazeera official would not say when the channel received the tape but said it was different than the Aug 4 video, in which Zawahri made similar warnings to the West. Thursday's tape bore English subtitles and showed Zawahri wearing a turban with an automatic rifle propped up behind him.
|
"This glorious raid, like the others before it in New York, Washington and Madrid, has moved our battle right to the enemy's doorstep," said Zawahri, referring to the September 11, 2001. attacks in the United States and last year's bombing on Madrid trains which were blamed on al Qaeda. "And as they have let rivers of blood run in our countries, we will, God willing, erupt volcanoes of anger in their countries," he said. "People of the crusader alliance, behold the disasters the policies of (U.S. President George W.) Bush and Blair will bring upon you," he added.
In the August 4 tape, Zawahri repeated previous threats against the United States, saying it and other Western nations would not live in peace until they withdraw their troops from Iraq and other Muslim countries.

Intelligence experts urge caution over suicide bomber's video
By Philip Johnston, Home Affairs Editor (Filed: 03/09/2005)
Intelligence experts last night cautioned against assumptions that a video message left by one of the London suicide bombers was conclusive proof that the outrage was planned by al-Qa'eda's top command. They still believe Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, and three other British Muslims who killed themselves and 52 victims on July 7 may have been acting independently. Police and MI5 analysts were assessing the implications of the tape in which Khan, 30, who was born and brought up in Yorkshire, blamed Britain's involvement in the Iraq war for his actions. He described himself as "a soldier at war" and said there were others like him ready to carry out further attacks.
The video, broadcast on the Arab television channel al-Jazeera, provided a missing piece of the jigsaw that had baffled counter-terrorism specialists since the atrocity. Suicide bombers normally leave a message behind to justify what they have done and extract maximum propaganda value. But the emergence of the video almost two months after the attacks has raised as many questions as it answered. While the broadcast of an accompanying message from Ayman al-Zawahiri, a lieutenant of Osama bin Laden, appeared to show a direct connection with al-Qa'eda, security officials were not jumping to any conclusions.
Until Thursday, MI5 and the police had found no evidence of outside involvement in the bombings and they do not believe the video conclusively proves the operation was run directly by al-Qa'eda. One possibility being explored is that the tape was made in Britain and left with someone who ensured it reached al-Qa'eda leaders in Pakistan or Afghanistan, which would be one reason why it took so long to come out. Alternatively, it could have been made months ago when Khan visited Pakistan.
Irshad Hussain, who knew Khan because both lived in the same Dewsbury suburb, said: "It looks like an older video. If you look at his age when he blew himself up and you look at the video he looks much younger there."
Abdel Bari-Atwan, editor of Al Quds, a London-based Arabic newspaper, said the video demonstrated that al-Qa'eda had penetrated the Muslim extremist community. "When they show this tape with Ayman al-Zawahiri speaking on the same tape they would like to confirm that they are behind the London bombings and to say to those people who doubt this 'You are not telling the truth. We recruited them and we groomed them'."
However, it remains unclear whether the other bombers also left similar messages and, if so, where they are.
The Government has rejected any connection between the attacks and the Iraq war, though Kenneth Clarke, the Tory leadership contender, this week said Britain's foreign policy had made the country ''one of the targets for Islamic extremists''. Sir Malcolm Rifkind, the former Foreign Secretary and another leadership hopeful, said the "widespread belief" among some Muslims that the Government's foreign policy was directed against Muslims was wrong.
"I was against the war - I'm no supporter of the government on that objective, but I do absolve them completely of any anti-Muslim objectives and I think the government has to work a lot harder to explain its foreign policy."
Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, yesterday said there was "no excuse, no justification for terrorism of any kind". He added: "Those who wrongly claim to speak in the name of Islam are mainly killing their fellow Muslims."
Inayat Bunglawala, spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain, said it was "obscene" to suggest justice for the people of Iraq could be obtained by an act of injustice against the people of London. "Holding all British people responsible for the Iraq war is just plain wrong - this country was bitterly divided and many millions, perhaps the majority, clearly opposed the war."
However, Mr Bunglawala said Britain's foreign policy had caused anger among young Muslims and ''left a huge opening for radicals operating in Islamic communities across the country". - Telegraph

An hour-long videotape apparently released by al-Sahab Enterprises, the public relations arm of al Qaeda was reportedly obtained by ABC News in Waziristan, Pakistan last weekend. The tape is narrated by a terrorist who identifies himself as Assam the American. Videotaped with his face concealed by a head dress, he spoke with an American accent and promised that the next attack will "dwarf 9/11." He further stated "The streets will run with blood," and "America will mourn in silence" because they will be unable to count the number of the dead. The speaker added that America has brought this on itself for electing George Bush who has made war on Islam by destroying the Taliban and making war on Al Qaeda. - North East Intell net
Why did the CIA not verify the tape's authenticity of Azzam the American, which containes a logo of "an al-Qaida production group", but "approved" Bin Laden's video 1 day later, which had the same logo?
