WAR ON TERROR FOREVER?

The United States' declared war on terror is closer to the beginning than the end, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told graduates of the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday.

Rumsfeld told the 2004 graduating class of 935 cadets that in the three years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America, the U.S.-led coalition had "overthrown two vicious regimes and liberated 50 million people, disrupted terrorist cells across the globe and thwarted many terrorist attacks."

"Yet despite our successes, we are closer to the beginning of this struggle with global insurgency than to its end," he said.

Rumsfeld addressed the graduates, who wore full dress uniforms at West Point's Michie Stadium football field, before heading back for Washington for the dedication of the World War II Memorial. "

Sen. John Kerrys Wife Defends Women,
Right to Speak in Boston

Heinz meanz cash

Teresa Heinz Kerry tackled the notion of her outspokenness head on at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday with the hope that some day women will have the same freedom as men to speak their minds.

The wife of Sen. John Kerry kicked off her highly anticipated prime-time speech by telling delegates that "by now, I hope it will come as no surprise that I have something to say."

"My right to speak my mind, to have a voice, to be what some have called 'opinionated' is a right I deeply and profoundly cherish," she told the crowd that was set to nominate her husband as the Democratic presidential candidate Wednesday.

"My only hope is that, one day soon, women, who have all earned their right to their opinions instead of being labeled opinionated will be called smart and well-informed, just like men." - (Reuters) -

Free speech 'ZONES'?

"The Black Tea Society, which sees Democrats as collaborators with Republicans, has permits to march, but not near Causeway Street near the FleetCenter.

Officials have created a demonstration zone, which is bordered by double fencing and Jersey barriers. Officials are putting in netting so that the demonstrators will not be able to throw things out of the area.

"If you put people in a confined area, where there is not enough room for them and you put horses in there, and you surround it by an 8-foot fence -- that's a recipe for disaster," Black Tea Society member Elly Guillette said.

The elevated highway is above the zone, and the only exit and entrance is a narrow one at one end of the zone.

"It's the same in a movie theater, you can end up with a stampede. It is not a safe situation," Lang said. - Free-Speech Zone Near DNC Contested

A Message from the Mayor of Boston

I am thrilled to have the chance to showcase Boston not only as a vibrant city with its historical atmosphere and its contemporary, international flavor, but also as a premier destination for tourists and conventioneers alike. Most important, the world will discover what we already know - that diversity is the strength of our city.

The winning convention bid brings with it new prospects for the people of our city, and the opportunities it will provide will be open to everyone. It is an important economic development tool and a huge step forward for all Bostonians, but it is only the beginning. The impact of the convention will undoubtedly extend well beyond the last week of July.

I know many of you are eager to get involved, and I appreciate your enthusiasm and support for this endeavor. We will need all of the help we can get!

I am proud of how Boston's corporate, community and cultural leaders worked together to secure this victory. We have made tremendous progress, thanks in large part to their support, but this is only the beginning. Now we all have a lot of work to do and much to anticipate as well. I hope we can continue the momentum with which we started as we move ahead to organize and execute the best convention in DNC history. - Boston 2004

Terrorism redefined...

At a recent public terrorism awareness forum at the Tempe Public Library, Tomasi and other anarchists cringed to see law enforcement officials lump the Phoenix Anarchist Coalition with white-supremacist National Alliance and militant Islamic groups.

Law enforcement officials told the audience that anarchist graffiti and tattoos were possible indicators of terrorism and should be reported immediately, Tomasi said.

Painting anarchists as terrorists essentially criminalizes dissent, they say. It effectively gives the green light for police to gather intelligence on groups exercising their right to criticize government policies, they say.

"The idea of attacking people like us on the fringe is that they can get away with it now," Tomasi said. "A lot of this war on terror has little to do with fighting terror abroad and everything to do with controlling dissent at home."

Dan Elting, terrorism training coordinator for the community policing institute and a Phoenix police officer, said whether anarchists are terrorists depends on their behavior.

All militancy is labelled 'terrorist'

Elting uses the FBI's definition: Someone who commits an illegal act to serve a social or political objective. Some anarchists fit that bill, he said.

"Which is not to say that all anarchists are terrorists," Elting said. "We mention them to know some of their tactics."

It's wrong to think that anarchists want complete chaos, said Jack Crittenden, an Arizona State University political science professor.

Traditionally, anarchism has been defined as the abolishment of government over the people, who should be entitled to make collective decisions on the rules governing their lives, said Crittenden, who teaches political theory and philosophy.

"You can't make a blanket statement and say all anarchists are violent," Crittenden said.

Muslim sues, says he was called 'bin Laden' while working
A Muslim who worked at a subsidiary of Sears said he was repeatedly called "bin Laden," "Taliban" and "terrorist," then was fired after he complained. Belal Degedeh, who is of Jordanian and Palestinian origin, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday charging he was discriminated against for his ancestry and religion. Degedeh worked for Sears Logistics Services Inc. as a merchandise distributor. He claims as he unloaded trucks at a receiving dock, co-workers asked him if he was going to blow up the building and whether he had a bomb. When he told another co-worker he was from Palestine, Degedeh said he was asked: "Is that where the crazy Muslims are blowing themselves up?" He claims the harassment happened in late 2003, and after he complained of the harassment he started getting poor work assignments and once was sent home without pay. Degedeh is suing for emotional distress, inconvenience, lost wages and lost benefits. - Sun Times

BOO!

Officials confirmed on Tuesday [3rd Aug 2004] that some of the information used to identify specific threats in New York, Washington DC, and Newark, New Jersey, dated back to 2000 and 2001 - before the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Republican Convention NYC 2004

Pre-protest Intimidation Tactics by the FBI

The FBI has been questioning political demonstrators across the United States, and in rare cases even subpoenaing them, in an aggressive effort to forestall what officials say could be violent and disruptive protests at the Republican National Convention in New York. FBI officials are urging agents to canvass their communities for information about planned disruptions aimed at the convention and other coming political events, and they say they have developed a list of people who they think may have information about possible violence. - FBI goes knocking on political protesters' doors

Eric Lichtblau the FBI appears to be engaged in systematic political harassment and intimidation of legitimate anti-war protestors.

* Numerous anti-war protestors who have shown no inclination towards violence were visited by the FBI in a possible effort to prevent them from engaging in protest activity.

* Three young men were trailed by FBI agents and forced to cancel their trip to the Boston convention so that they could comply with a subpoena to testify before a federal grand jury.

* Many of these activities have been engaged in pursuant to undisclosed Department of Justice Legal opinions and FBI bulletins.

* An FBI employee charged that the FBI bulletins improperly violated First Amendment rights.

* The pattern of intimidating activity comes on the heels of the Justice Department subpoenaing Drake University for records concerning the sponsors of a campus anti-war forum (since withdrawn).

Anonymous eyewitness account
NYC Aug 30th 2004:

"I live in NYC, literally yards away from the barricade that stops protestors from entering the RNC convention area. On Sunday, the crowds were very peaceful. They gathered at the barrier and chanted, but it was a nice sunny day and everyone, police and protestors, seemed to be in a friendly mood.

Last night, however, it got very ugly. I have been watching the news coverage, and they describe it as a 'scuffle' (if they mention it at all.) That is the understatement of the year. The protestors gathered at the barrier and started a concerted effort to break through and head up to Madison Square Gardens. They managed to push the barriers aside and overwhelm the couple of dozen cops who were defending it.

Somebody hit the panic button because, out of nowhere, HUNDREDS of cops descended on the intersection. Many of them were in full riot gear with nightsticks drawn. They formed a line and pushed the protestors back, right underneath me as I watched in amazement from my apartment. I personally witnessed several people being beaten by police during the incident. It was an overwhelming display of force, so much so that I think it scared the protestors out of escalating it further. But it was very ugly indeed, and there were definitely injuries inflicted on the protestors.

I was so stunned to see this happening right outside my front door that it took me a while to realize I should be taking photographs. Unfortunately, my digital camera doesn't do well in low light conditions, and I only caught the tail end of it all, but I have attached some pictures here. Feel free to publish them if you so desire. The pictures don't do it justice. The street was filled from sidewalk to sidewalk with protestors being forced back by the riot cops. I'll make sure I keep my camera handy over the next couple of days.

All of this is a long way of saying that I think the web bot run is right on the money. From what I saw last night, I fear that things are going to get out of hand in a big way some time in the next couple of days. Madison Square could be our Tian'anmen Square.

Please do not use my name if you publish this. I am not a US citizen, but am a green card holder. Thanks to the Patriot Act, I lost my Bill of Rights protection and I don't want to lose my green card for 'dissent.' "

Ridge resigns

Tom Ridge, 59, who has led the effort to secure the United States against terrorist attacks since just a few weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide hijackings, announced his long-anticipated departure at a Washington news conference, saying he wanted to give a higher priority to family and personal matters. - BNN

Kerik was scheduled to spend six months in Iraq in 2003 as a special assistant training Iraqi police, but left after three. During a testimony at the 9/11 panel this May, Kerik revealed, that ex-FBI anti terror chief John O'Neill told him that there would be a pending attack on the Twin Towers.

Kerik was also authority, when handed over a passport from one of the Sep11th planes, first located by FBI agent Barry Mawn, coincidentally best friend of O' Neill. On September 16th, Kerik declared the passport as belonging "to one of the hijackers" but already "discovered a few days ago".

Officially, according to ABC, it was found in front of WTC 7 and belonged to Sataam Al-Suqami. It wasn't revealed, why the name wasn't disclosed earlier. Rumour has it, that the first statement included the name of Mohammed Atta, a rumour, which still circulates around. - INN info on Kerik

Bush to tap Kerik for Homeland Security

President Bush will nominate former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik to take over as secretary of homeland security, two administration officials said Thursday.

Kerik, 49, led the New York City Police Department through the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath.

He is currently a senior vice president of Giuliani Partners, the consulting firm founded by Rudy Giuliani, who as mayor of New York appointed him police commissioner in 2000. (Profile)

In 2003, Kerik went to Iraq at Bush's request to help train the new Iraqi police force, and he campaigned for Bush's re-election, making at speech at the Republican National Convention in August.

An administration official told CNN that on at least two occasions Giuliani made a personal pitch to the White House that Kerik be named to succeed Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, 59, who announced his resignation Tuesday. - CNN

Woolsey: Cold War approach to new threats

Washington, DC, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Former CIA Director James Woolsey told a congressional panel Wednesday that the U.S. government should treat the ideological bedfellows of Islamic terrorism the same way it treated Communists and their supporters during the Cold War.

Drawing parallels between what he said were two totalitarian ideologies, Communism and Islamic extremism, Woolsey noted that even at the height of the struggle with the Soviet Union, "We could not make it illegal to be a member of the American Communist Party.

"Congress tried and the Supreme Court struck it down," he told a hearing of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

But, he added, lawmakers were able to make "American Communists' lives very complicated and very difficult by making them register, by all sorts of steps." Washington Times

not so Secret detention camps...

Within the heavily guarded perimeters of the Defense Department's much-discussed Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, the CIA has maintained a detention facility for valuable al Qaeda captives that has never been mentioned in public, according to military officials and several current and former intelligence officers.

The buildings used by the CIA are shrouded by high fences covered with thick green mesh plastic and ringed with floodlights, officials said. They sit within the larger Camp Echo complex, which was erected to house the Defense Department's high-value detainees and those awaiting military trials on terrorism charges.

The facility has housed detainees from Pakistan, West Africa, Yemen and other countries under the strictest secrecy, the sources said. "People are constantly leaving and coming," said one U.S. official who visited the base in recent months. It is unclear whether the facility is still in operation today. WASHINGTON - The nation's 55th presidential inauguration, the first to be held since 9/11, will take place this month under perhaps the heaviest security of any in U.S. history. Dozens of federal and local law enforcement agencies and military commands are planning what they describe as the heaviest possible security. Virtually everyone who gets within eyesight of the president either during the Jan. 20 inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Capitol or the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue later in the day will first go through a metal detector or receive a body pat-down. Thousands of police officers and military personnel are being brought to Washington from around the country for the four-day event. Sharpshooters will be deployed on roofs, while bomb-sniffing dogs will work the streets. Electronic sensors will be used to detect chemical or biological weapons. Anti-abortion protesters have been warned to leave their crosses at home. Parade performers will have security escorts to the bathroom, and they've been ordered not to look directly at President Bush or make any sudden movements while passing the reviewing stand. - Herald

JOINT STATEMENT OF U.S. ATTORNEY MICHAEL J. SULLIVAN AND FBI SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE KENNETH W. KAISER

Jan 19th - Boston, MA... Information was received by federal law enforcement in Boston today originating from an unknown and uncorroborated source regarding an unspecified potential threat to the City of Boston.

There is no further specific information regarding the City of Boston nor is there any degree of specificity on the type of potential threat. As is done whenever we receive this type of information, all appropriate investigative steps are taken.

Photos of four Chinese nationals have been disseminated to all members of law enforcement, the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council and the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Massachusetts and are being made available to the media as well.

The following four nationals are being sought for questioning:

1) Zengrong Lin
2) Wen Quin Zheng
3) Xiujin Chen
4) Guozhi Lin

None of these individuals' names has been validated as a 'person of interest' on any previously existing 'watch list'. We have no information regarding the whereabouts of these individuals. - FBI Boston

Then there were nine...

The FBI on Thursday added the names of nine Chinese people and one other man to the list of those being sought for questioning about a possible terror plot targeting Boston.

FBI spokesman Joe Parris said the names "were developed as a result of the ongoing investigation" but did not signal that credible evidence has emerged indicating such a plot actually exists.

"Information is still uncorroborated and from a source of unknown reliability and motive," Parris said. - source

By promoting liberty abroad, we will build a safer world. By encouraging liberty at home, we will build a more hopeful America. Like generations before us, we have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom. This is the everlasting dream of America and tonight, in this place, that dream is renewed. Now we go forward grateful for our freedom, faithful to our cause, and confident in the future of the greatest nation on earth." - BUSHpre inaugaration speech

George W Bush's inauguration speech -

spreading freedom? American freedom? WHERE? WHAT FREEDOM?

"For a half a century, America defended our own freedom by standing watch on distant borders. After the shipwreck of communism came years of relative quiet, years of repose, years of sabbatical. And then there came a day of fire.

We have seen our vulnerability and we have seen its deepest source.

For as long as whole regions of the world simmer in resentment and tyranny, prone to ideologies that feed hatred and excuse murder, violence will gather and multiply in destructive power and cross the most defended borders and raise a mortal threat.

There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment and expose the pretensions of tyrants and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.

We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands.

The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.

America's vital interests and our deepest beliefs are now one. From the day of our founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights and dignity and matchless value, because they bear the image of the maker of heaven and Earth." - George W Bush's inauguration speech in full

Both halos and crowns, when we penetrate to their true meaning, are symbolic forms of what clairvoyants call the aura, the envelope of light surrounding the human body. The word "aura" itself is derived from the Latin aurum, meaning "gold." The color, intensity and shape of the aura are said to be indicators of a person's physical, mental and spiritual condition. A highly spiritual person-one who is deeply attuned to God or to the Divine Source of our existence-can be identified by his or her aura, it is said, because it has an unmistakable golden-white color. It flashes and scintillates like sunlight, and it has its greatest dimension and intensity around the person's head, where it is called the corona, the same name as for what is seen around the sun during an eclipse. And when royalty is crowned, of course, it is called a coronation.

That is what crowns and halos represent, and they are associated by tradition only with royalty, with holy people and with supernatural beings such as angels. Originally-that is, when human society arose-leaders and heads of state were quite literally considered to be god-kings or agents of divinity. There was no difference between a spiritual leader and a political leader. Those who led the people in either sphere of activity were one and the same. That position is still present in a theocracy, where the nation or organization is headed by someone who is regarded as divine or an agent of divinity, such as the Pope, the Dalai Lama, the Emperor of Japan, and the mullahs of Iran and Afghanistan. - |American MASON

Bush moseys on down to church...

Having vowed to "sweep away tyranny" and "spread freedom throughout the world" in his second term in office, President George Bush went to church to pray yesterday.

About 3,200 guests, relatives and colleagues attended an hour-long service at Washington's National Cathedral that included instrumental and choral music and a multi-faith lineup of Christian, Jewish and Muslim clergy.

America's best known evangelist, Billy Graham, 86, led the service and delivered one prayer in which suggested the Almighty had played a part in Mr Bush's re-election. Mr Bush credits Mr Graham with inspiring him to give up drinking at the age of 40 and to become a born-again Christian. "Their next four years are hidden from us, but they are not hidden from you," said Mr Graham. "You know the challenges and opportunities they will face. Give them a clear mind, a warm heart, calmness in the midst of turmoil, reassurance in times of discouragement and your presence always." - Independent

US legislation targets immigrants, refugees in "terror war"

The US House of Representatives passed legislation February 10 that would intensify a repressive crackdown against immigrants and refugees under the pretext of combating terrorism.

The bill, known as the "Real ID Act," would effectively slam the door in the face of refugees fleeing persecution, facilitate the deportation of both asylum seekers and legal residents and deny drivers' licenses to the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US. Another provision would grant the Secretary of Homeland Security extra-legal powers to complete the walling off of a section of the US-Mexican border. More from World Socialist web site

Bush Nominates Negroponte As National Intelligence Boss

The president said it will take some time to get the new processes in place, and that Negroponte is uniquely qualified to handle the assignment. "He's a diplomat," Bush said. "He understands the power centers in Washington. He's been a consumer of intelligence in the past, and so he's got a good feel for how to move this process forward in a way that addresses the different interests." - source

Bush signaled that he sees Negroponte as the man to steer his intelligence clearinghouse. ``If we're going to stop the terrorists before they strike, we must ensure that our intelligence agencies work as a single, unified enterprise,'' Bush said.

lots of influence?

Negroponte will have coveted time with the president during daily intelligence briefings and will have authority over the spy community's intelligence collection priorities. Perhaps most importantly, Bush made clear that Negroponte will set budgets for the national intelligence agencies.

``People who control the money, people who have access to the president generally have a lot of influence,'' Bush said. ``And that's why John Negroponte is going to have a lot of influence.'' - source

Just in case you don't remember...

At the time Mr. Negroponte was in Honduras, Honduras was a military dictatorship. Kidnapping, rape, torture and executions of dissidents was rampant. The military top and middle ranks were U.S-trained at the School of the Americas (SOA), the Harvard version of the CIA, based in Fort Benning, Georgia. According to Human Rights Watch, graduates of the SOA are responsible for the worst human rights abuses and torture of dissidents in Latin America. Some of its 60,000 graduates are notorious Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, Guillermo Rodriguez of Ecuador, Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia and Gustavo Álvarez Martínez, Honduras security police chief and later Honduran top military commander.

In Honduras the army intelligence unit, Battalion 3-16, which was involved in kidnappings, rape, torture and killing of suspected dissidents. In 1995 Gary Cohn and Ginger Thompson of The Baltimore Sun unearthed massive and substantiated evidence from various sources pointing the finger at Mr. Negroponte knowledge of the crimes. The reporters also found that hundreds of Hondurans "were kidnapped, tortured and killed in the 1980s by a secret army unit trained and supported by the CIA"(2). Reliable evidence from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Honduras alleged that Negroponte oversaw the expansion of U.S training camp and military base on Honduran territory, where US-trained Contras terrorists, and where the military secretly detained, tortured and executed Honduran suspected dissidents. - countercurrents

Some things NEVER change, do they?
Cops using dangerous Neck Hold Techniques
to render peaceful protestors unconcious

below you will find video from Monday's arrests at Tent University Santa Cruz. Hopefully this imagery will allow you to see the pain and violence that both the university and the police are willing to inflict upon the peaceful, non-violent, participants. If you don't know what TUSC is about, read the bottom of this page. This video was shot by Martin Shulman and edited into this rough state with the priority that getting it out there for people to see is the most important thing. I hope that you come and support us as we fight to express ourselves in an open, non-violent community of students, faculty, staff, and Santa Cruz citizens. The actions taken last night by the administration should not be allowed to go on without consequence and honest dialogue. Thank you and thanks to those who continue the struggle. We, the people, have the power.

At about this time the police, in riot gear helmets, came marching in and began surrounding the tent that we were all in. In order to do so they needed to move the tents that had been erected. Instead of being courteous and gently moving the equipment, they simply tore the structures down. Many had been staked to the ground, and many were physically ripped from the ground, causing the material to tear and effectively destroyed.

Now it is important to realize that it wasn't like we (the lockdowned SITTING people) were going anywhere. There was no need to hurry, it wasn't a dangerous or threatening situation in any way. So the logic for such brute force can't really be rationalized in that way. It was a statement about things to come. After ripping the tents out of the way, the police began surrounding us, and creating a wall between us and the standing supporters outside.

People were still allowed to leave and enter the tent however. As the cops continued to 'secure' the area, people continued to shift, switch and exchange for other people. Other supporters began placing blankets, food, and water within each circle in order to help sustain us for what might lay ahead. It wasn't too long before the first person was violently taken from their peaceful and non-violent community.

Like the others that would soon follow, I could not completely see what was happening because it was directly behind me, but I could hear it, and it was intense. The amount of sound that was created as the first one was pried away from their circle was consuming. People were feeling all sorts of different emotions, and it could be hear in their different yells and screams and cries. But collectively we expressed the pain over such an ignorant, cruel, calculated and misguided action. read more

The carotid artery is a major artery located in the front of the neck. Through the carotid artery, blood from the heart goes to the brain. There are 2 "common" carotid arteries -- the right and left common carotid arteries -- one on each side of the neck. Together, the right and left common carotid arteries provide the principal blood supply to the head and neck. - medicinenet

Sealing the breath refers to the act of inhibiting air from entering the lungs (respiratory restraint). This can be achieved through several means. The solar plexus can be struck for instance, in order to paralyze the diaphragm, thereby impairing the mechanics of breathing. If the diaphragm does not regain function prior to the air being used up in the lungs, unconsciousness results. The other way to seal the breath is to use 'choking' techniques, widely used in ground fighting because they can quickly end a fight by painful submissions. Choking techniques often employ a forearm to apply pressure across the front of the throat to close off the airway. Predatory animals instinctively go for the throat, as this is the fastest and most efficient way to subdue and kill their prey. In a street fight, the throat is a vital area in need of protection.
