 In 1996, she assisted her uncle, University of Alberta scholar John-Paul Himka, with research for a paper in the Journal of Ukrainian Studies on Krakivski Visti in the context of Ukrainian-Jewish relations. In the paper, Himka, who is Chomiak's son-in-law and Freeland's uncle, shows that the Krakivski Visti was established in Nazi-occupied Krakow in 1940, where many Ukrainian nationalists fled the previous year when the Soviet army invaded Lviv, the capital of Ukrainian Galicia. Many of these migrants feared the communists more than the fascists and, as a result, collaborated with Nazi-dominated institutions in Poland and Austria, including the media. |

The red and black flag has historically represented the Bandera movement in Ukraine. Stepan Bandera was a Nationalist Ukrainian politician during the Second World War who is accused of war crimes and leading atrocities against Jewish and Polish people.
He is an incredibly polarizing political figure in Ukraine, as some view him a national hero who fought for Ukrainian independence.
Bandera helped create the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (UPA), an organization that legacy media reports have described as being 'far-right' and 'extremist' and who have been characterized as 'Neo-Nazis.'
In April 2021, Euro News described Bandera and the UPA as Nazi-collaborators and war criminals.
'Bandera, Shukhevych, and the UPA are controversial for several reasons. Critics point to the mass killings of up to 100,000 Jews and Poles and the fact that UPA cooperated with Nazi Germany at the beginning of WW2 until it became clear that Nazi Germany wouldn't recognize Ukrainian independence.'

Of all the countries where Soros has placed his philanthropic bets since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ukraine seems on the verge of producing the greatest payoff. There, more than anywhere else, Soros has been able to exert influence at the highest levels of the government to see his ideas implemented. Indeed, if President Leonid Kuchma succeeds in bringing about the economic reforms he has recently promised, that over-all scenario will have been scripted, to a notable degree, by Soros.
It began back in the fall of 1991, when Ukraine declared its independence, and Soros had what he calls a 'seminal meeting' with Dr. Bohdan Hawrylyshyn, an internationally known Ukrainian economist, who, after living abroad for many years, had decided to return to Ukraine in 1988, to help steer its course, and in 1990 had become chairman of the new Soros foundation there. The foundation started out with the usual Soros mandate, to foster civil society mainly through the support of cultural and educational activities. But, with Ukraine's declaration of independence, Soros recalls, he and Hawrylyshyn decided on a far more ambitious role for the foundation: it would build the institutions that would enable Ukraine to function as an independent and democratic state. Because of its years as part of the U.S.S.R., Ukraine had none of those institutions in place. 'It was a vacuum,' Soros told me, and so 'there was a great willingness to accept this kind of support, which would in normal times be rather intrusive.' He added, laughing, 'I mean, I can't try to do that in America. They would tell me where to get off!'
Bohdan Krawchenko, a Ukrainian-Canadian historian who returned to Ukraine in 1991 and was recruited by Hawrylyshyn and Soros to work for the foundation, stressed that, however primitive Ukraine may appear to a newcomer today, it was far more barren in 1991. Krawchenko said, 'When we first started coming here, three and a half years ago, I remember George saying to me, 'This is a banana republic without the bananas!' '

Contrasting the Soros foundation in Ukraine with its counterparts in other countries, Krawchenko told me, 'There is no other place where the Soros foundation is so plugged in at the top. We were here when there was nothing. . . . The deputy minister of finance sat with George and me in a basement almost four years ago and we tried to figure out what to do about monetary reform.' That deputy minister of finance, Olech Havrylyshyn (a nephew of Bohdan), was on the payroll of the Soros foundation—as was the deputy governor of the National Bank (George Yurchyshyn, a Ukrainian-American who had previously been a vice-president at the Bank of Boston).
Despite the fact that Soros had placed his own agents in key positions, he was still not able to move Ukraine according to his design. The President at the time, Leonid Kravchuk, was unwilling to pursue the kinds of free-market reforms that Soros and his allies were advocating. Soros became so frustrated, Bohdan Hawrylyshyn recalls, that back in early 1993 he even talked about giving up. It happened that around that time Soros named a new executive director of his foundation, Bohdan Budzan, who had spent years as a bureaucrat in the Communist regime. And if any individual symbolizes Soros's present determination to make things happen in a country by dealing at the top—and doing so in whatever ways are most effective—it is Budzan, who is so much the stereotype of a Party commissar that he seems a caricature. One person who has dealt extensively with Budzan and the foundation told me, 'George saw him as a guy who could get things done, a guy from the old regime—who but an old Party hack, in this society, at this time? Budzan is a press-down, chain-of-command kind of guy.'

The Youth Delegate Program is active in only 16 percent of the world's countries. Most of them are European. Ukraine is among this small community of democratic governments who give this opportunity to their youth and allow them to represent the country on an official level. This is a privilege, considering all the risks young people can bring along with them to the United Nations. An even smaller circle of countries offers their youth delegates an opportunity to deliver a speech at the opening of the General Assembly's Third Committee.

(Excerpt from Global shapers response to Ukraine invasion)
The humanitarian response: How it started
During the first hours after the invasion, Ievgeniia, Curator of the Global Shapers Kyiv Hub, created a cooperation group between the four Ukrainian Hubs: Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa. The aim was to spread the word about the situation to the Global Shapers Community, build advocacy campaigns and influence policy-makers to act.
After hundreds of messages from shapers and our international friends "Our thoughts are with you! How are you? How can we help?", we realised we needed a straightforward answer. We realised this was our niche of expertise. Having a huge international network all over the world, we can send a clear message on how foreigners can help Ukraine.
For that purpose, Diana, former GS Kyiv Hub Curator, consolidated all official resources at the Kyiv Hub's Notion document for its easier navigation and distribution. The working document consisted of official funds to donate to, official resources to read news, social media campaigns and protests worldwide.
The team of 30+ Ukrainian Shapers distributed the first link across its network and the six-handshakes rule worked! From 2600 viewers on the first day, the website grew and reached 127K visitors on the 3rd day of its operation.
By the third day of the war, foreigners who saw the website reached the team with specific questions like:
-"...My university wonders how we can help Ukrainian professors and students. Any recommendations?"
-"We are a technology company in Romania. We have a product for the government of Ukraine for free. We want to help the Ukraine Government. Can you please connect to someone?"
We managed to cover these requests based on our internal network and connections between shapers. Ukrainian shapers shared contacts with the ministry of digital transformation, others coordinated logistics to supply humanitarian aid from abroad. The power of the network fascinates you the most when you receive a "report" photo so you can see the team's impact immediately. That was the moment we realised our superpower.

Our superpower in the humanitarian effort
The main essence of requests during war is their urgency. To address them you have to obtain two elements cumulatively: responding fast, and having a powerful network. We have both.
From the first day of the war, we have been addressing pinpointed humanitarian aid and even covered evacuation costs for foreign students for 2.400 USD merely based on our network. While the government addressed other priorities, and global international organisations tackled its bureaucracy machine, we covered both simultaneously and provided links and connections to real people who can help.

During a February 2020 speech to the World Economic Forum, which took place just a few months before the WEF's controversial 'Great Reset' meeting, the newly 'elected' Ukrainian President Zelensky said:
'I would like to note the projects of the Forum for Ukraine, and namely: Scenarios of the Future for Ukraine; Geneva initiative for Ukraine; the new economic vision for Ukraine. And I thank you for what has already been done and I count on the further fruitful cooperation.
Looking at the projects Zelensky thanked WEF for, it makes one wonder who is actually running Ukraine and who is actually to blame for Ukrainian people now finding themselves at the center of what Boris Johnson calls 'the biggest war in Europe since 1945.'
Scenarios for Ukraine is where 300 decision-makers, government, business and civil society leaders as well as leading experts sketched out different pathways for Ukraine's future economic development. These WEF 'decision-makers' published their report on 11 April 2014.
Geneva Ukraine Initiative is where business leaders from Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Europe and the United States gathered in Geneva, on 14 September 2014, and worked out 10 proposals, to help resolve the conflict. 'The group calls for a summit of top political leaders as soon as possible,' the WEF announced.
Zelensky's speech at Davbos 2020 continued:
'The topics which are debated here in Davos always focus on the state of the modern world and elucidate the challenges facing humanity. And this year for united the leaders to discuss extremely important topic the cohesive and sustainable world.'

Following 16 years of service in the Soviet KGB, Putin was building his reputation as a politician in 1993, acting as deputy to the Mayor of St Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak. Sobchak subsequently co-authored the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
Putin was at the 2009 World Economic Forum
Putin was instrumental in encouraging foreign investment into the city and it was during his time in St Petersburg that Putin seemingly developed a close relationship with Klaus Schwab. In his address to the WEF's 2021 virtual Davos gathering, Putin said:
"Mr. Schwab, dear Klaus, [. . .] I have been to Davos many times, attending the events organized by Mr. Schwab, even back in the 1990s. Klaus just recalled that we met in 1992. Indeed, during my time in St Petersburg, I visited this important forum many times. [. . .] [I]t is difficult to overlook the fundamental changes in the global economy, politics, social life, and technology. The coronavirus pandemic [. . .] spurred and accelerated the structural changes."
