Canopy

when i was a kid
i'd climb high into the trees
to see what i could see
those were the days

up in the branches
risking life and limb
just to get a glimpse
from on high

the light would spatter me
through dapple canopy
and when i reach the top
blue blue sky

birds would scatter
rustling in the
cauliflower treetops
it made me want to fly

now i'm older
maybe not quite so bold
but i still won't do what i'm told
risking life & limb

break through the patterns
that light forms upon my eyes
it's a canopy
of beauty truth & lies

sometimes i'd lay awake at night
and wonder what it's like
not to be alive
the darkness all around
my body underground

i'd worry and i'd fret
but it ain't happened yet
i look up
through a canopy
of hope

and that's when i fell
downward spiral
branches bruise
the ground approaches
all too soon

would you like to sit with me?
we could perch a top the trees
spend the day like birds so free
above the real world canopy.
