Al-Zarqawi Murdered Berg, CIA Concludes
Friday , May 14, 2004 - WASHINGTON - Terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (search) was most likely the man who beheaded Nicholas Berg, the American citizen whose execution was captured on videotape and shown on an Islamic Web site, U.S. intelligence and military officials said Thursday.
Despite the poor quality of the digitized audio and video of the tape that has been circulating since it first appeared Tuesday, officials said an initial technical analysis concluded that there was a "high probability" Berg's killer was the notorious al-Zarqawi.
A more detailed study of the videotape is being done, intelligence officials said.
"All indications are that is the case," said Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez (search), the No. 2 U.S. military leader in Iraq. Asked whether he meant Zarqawi personally carried out the execution, Sanchez said, "All indications are he did it."
Asked about Zarqawi's whereabouts, the general said, "We believe he's moving around the country."
Berg's body was found in Baghdad on Saturday.
Meanwhile, sources close to the situation told Fox News that there was a "coincidental" link between Berg and accused Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui (search).
FBI agents interviewed Berg a few years ago when they were investigating the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, the sources said. He was interviewed because, unbeknownst to him, Moussaoui had used his e-mail account when he was in Oklahoma.
Berg attended the University of Oklahoma and Moussaoui first settled in Norman, Okla., when he came to the U.S. The accused co-conspirator used at least one of the university's computers to communicate online, according to the sources.
The sources said that the FBI concluded that Berg had innocently given his e-mail account to someone and it had landed in the hands of other people, including Moussaoui.
On Tuesday, an Islamic Web site released the video showing Berg's beheading, titled "Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi slaughters an American infidel with his own hands."
The person shown speaking in the video - determined to be al-Zarqawi - wears a head scarf and a ski mask and is then shown on the video decapitating Berg, the official said. The speaker reads a lengthy statement criticizing Islamic scholars and taunting the crusaders.
Standing alongside four other militants wearing head scarves and masks to disguise themselves, al-Zarqawi then kills Berg.
Al-Zarqawi is thought to be in Iraq, operating his own terrorist network, known simply as the "Zarqawi network." A specialist in poisons, he is thought to have extensive ties across the militant Islamic movement and is considered an ally of Usama bin Laden.
As recently as March, U.S. officials said al-Zarqawi's practice was not to make taped public pronouncements or take credit for attacks. However, in the last five weeks, he has increased his public profile with at least three recordings, including Berg's beheading.
Al-Zarqawi is believed to be behind well over a dozen high-profile attacks in Iraq, and many other acts of violence, which have killed hundreds. The United States is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to his death or capture.

The FBI confirmed that agents also interviewed Berg's parents about why he was in Iraq.
"The agency had been asked to interview the parents regarding Mr. Berg's purpose in Iraq," FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams said without elaborating.
He said Berg's family learned about his death Monday and is devastated by the news. The family has asked the State Department to release the body as soon as possible, he said.
Berg's family told The Associated Press that they knew he had been decapitated but weren't aware of the details.
"I knew he was decapitated before," Michael Berg told the AP. "That manner is preferable to a long and torturous death. But I didn't want it to become public."
In early April, Berg's parents filed suit against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying their son was being held by the U.S. military without merit. However, just days after it was filed, the suit was declared moot.
He said the family also wants to "find out a lot more information" about what happened between the time Berg was released by authorities and when he was taken hostage.
"They are very interested in finding out more about those circumstances," Gerlach told CNN.

NASR: Oh, I find it very interesting, because out of the blue, there is a mention of al Qaeda on the U.S. government translation. It says: "Does al Qaeda need any further excuses?" Any speaker of the Arabic language is going to notice a difference between the word al Qaeda, which means "the base," and al qaed, which means "the one sitting, doing nothing."
My translation says: "Is there any excuse for the one who sits down and does nothing?" Basically they're telling people, you have no excuse for not doing anything, for not acting and defending Islam and so forth. U.S. officials say the FBI questioned Berg in 2002 after a computer password Berg used in college turned up in the possession of Zaccarias Moussaoui, the al Qaeda operative arrested shortly before 9/11 for his suspicious activity at a flight school in Minnesota.
The bureau had already dismissed the connection between Berg and Moussaoui as nothing more than a college student who had been careless about protecting his password.
But in the wake of Berg's gruesome murder, it becomes a stranger than fiction coincidence -- an American who inadvertently gave away his computer password to one notorious al Qaeda operative is later murdered by another notorious al Qaeda operative.

Echoing Dr Simpson's criticism, when this journalist asked forensic death expert Jon Nordby, PhD and fellow of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, whether he believed the Berg decapitation video had been "staged", Nordby replied: "Yes, I think that's the best explanation of it."
Questions of when the video's footage was taken, and the time elapsed between the shooting of the video's segments, were raised by both experts, reflecting a portion of the broader and ongoing video controversy. Nordby, speaking to Asia Times Online from Washington state, noted: "We don't know how much time wasn't filmed," adding that "there's no way of knowing whether ... footage is contemporaneous with the footage that follows".

The links between Nick Berg and Zacarias Moussaoui, once described as the "20th hijacker" of 9/11, opened now room for new speculations, if there are deeper ties between the OKC Bombing'95 and 9/11, than thought before.
Apparently Berg knew also Moussaoui's roomates.
One of them was Mujahid Menepta, who is connected to both 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1995 OKC bombing.
But Menepta wasn't arrested in Summer 2001, when Moussaoui got caught. The FBI waited until after Sep11th. Why?

The historical fact is that those words were written in 1894, three years after Pike's death. They were written by a notorious atheist and pornographer named Gabriel Jogand-Pages who was better known by his pen name, Leo Taxil. Taxil was engaged in an elaborate hoax to discredit the Church of Rome and made up the Pike quotation out of thin air.
"His purpose was to show that the Church had failed to recognize the 'threat' posed by Freemasonry and was, therefore, headed by fools and incompetents. Taxil publicly admitted the hoax in 1897, but it had already been published by a man named Abel Clarin de la Rive, who took Taxil's hoax at face value.
